Wisdom of a beautiful white Swan and her rider

Saraswati is the daughter of Shiva and Durga. The Goddess of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom and nature and represents the free flow of wisdom and consciousness. The meaning of Saraswati is ‘the flowing one’. She is seen as the mother of the Veda’s or the Hindu scriptures. Saraswati is praised by the wise and artist of all forms and without her there is only chaos. All Indian Goddesses are connected to creativity, because Shakti is inherently creative. But Sarawati is the one whose cosmic function is to embody the creative flow through language, speech and sound. Solitary creative woman

Since Saraswati is very much dedicated to personal growth and to gain more insights and wisdom, she often ends up alone in the mythological stories. This is also for true for the ‘Saraswati women’ among us of whom many are not ending up in long term relationships. They live solitary lives and are often seen as unconventional, since they are unaware of the existence of any rules. Saraswati women get their deepest satisfaction from being in touch with the creative flow of life. Commonly women who identify with Saraswati are writes, nuns, scholars, musicians, spiritual teachers, scientists, yoginis or artists.

Discipline

Saraswati also symbolizes discipline and rigor, since to truly master an art we have to spend hours and hours practicing. She is not your traditional wife, instead she prefers to spend all her time studying, meditating, practicing or learning. Sarawati is not so much focused on financial gains or abundance more so on recognition, fame and acknowledgment of her / his (you also have men with lots of Sarawati energy) skills. Saraswati can also be noticed in the teacher who is asking the right (critical) questions for you to learn and grow.

Shadow Saraswati

Saraswati is the deity to invoke when you need some help with your communication. For example becoming a better listener or being able to speak truthfully from your heart. She is also the original energy behind the internet and computer wizards can be seen as children of Sarawati. In her book Awakening the Shakti, Sally Kempton calls Sarawati the ‘cosmic downloader’, “the mother of innovation, who lives as the source code behind your computer’s programs as well as in your inspirations and your capacity to follow them to a real-world manifestation.” Miscommunication or communication that isn’t pure and true is also called the Shadow Saraswati. It can be small like talking too much and not being able to listen well. Or something bigger like causing big harm through propaganda which can potentially cause war and for sure lots of pain and damage. We fall into the shadow of Saraswati if we don’t notice the difference between truth and falsehood and if we are not able to use our speech to speak the truth.

Tapping into your intuition

Saraswati is also the one to turn to when you are looking for inspiration, wisdom and answers. This requires you to listen very careful, to turn your attention inward, because Saraswati voice is so subtle and her voice is often hidden. There are two distinctive ways to receive inspiration from Saraswati or tap into your own intuition. Since connecting with your own intuition is symbolizing you connecting with your inner guru or Saraswati. One way to connect with her is through automatic writing, the other one is through inner listening. For both ways to work, it is required first to take time to become calm, aware and present, through for example a meditation practice. Then you can choose the way that works best for you and let the inspiration flow through you.

Flowing like water

Saraswati can also teach us to learn go with the flow while seeing her sitting comfortably on her beautiful white Swan going with the natural stream of the river effortlessly. Every corner of the river represents a new experience and Saraswati accepts this new situation fully. Since how do you learn and gain more insights? Through new experiences and situations. Saraswati is for me the invitation to embrace the quality of water within us and flow through life with ease, joy and trust. It brings me back to my childhood when I played outside in nature during the holidays and lost track of time and was ‘in the flow’ while playing and discovering. It reminds me of those moments where I listened to a beautiful song that reminds of how perfect this very moment is. Ultimately, it is the realization that the wisdom & happiness we all seek, is already here in this very moment and in the wisdom of our own body.

Be Real

Again, I have been blown away by the amazing and powerful effects of The Journey Process. For me it is the quickest way to feel peaceful, happy and at ease, to arrive home.

Dear you,

I am grateful we met! I would like you to know;

  • It touches me if you dare to share the truth – what is going on right now, here.
  • It touches me if you speak from your heart, saying how you really feel.
  • It touches me if you leave the stories for what they are – stories – and really start to experience and feel.
  • It touches me if you share with me, what you usually don’t share at all.
  • It touches me to see your eagerness to come at peace with life.
  • It touches me if I see you surrender.
  • It touches me if you forgive completely and utterly from the bottom of your heart.

Emotions can be the gateway to our soul, to our true desires, to our true being. Don’t fight or resist emotions. Just let it be.

We will become mirrors and invite other’s to be REAL as well. No need for masks, pretending or hiding. It is time to say YES to life!

A closer look at judgement

Judging, it is done so easily without fully realizing it. I betray myself quite regularly on not-so-nice judgement behaviour. Often, we have made the decision whether to like or dislike a person, quite soon after meeting her/him for the first time. It’s all about first impressions. Without exactly talking to a person – I make up a story in my mind about this person’s life and behaviour. Before I know, I have attached labels to persons;

  • He is always grumpy, so I won’t try to talk to him anyway,
  • She is a control freak and hard to deal with
  • She is shy and probably a bit boring
  • She definitely needs some therapy since she doesn’t look happy
  • He has such a perfect life and therefore has no empathy for others
  • He has rich parents and is terribly spoiled

And so on. I’m wondering what kind of labels people have attached to my appearance. I would like to bow to life, because it shows me time after the time that ‘judging’ brings me nowhere. It only surprises me if my judging is again absolutely not in the right direction. From the outside someone’s life could look perfect, but if you get to know a person better; almost everyone has his or her challenges and obstacles in life. As a Journey Practitioner, wonderful emotional transformations happen right in front of me. I feel so humbled and blessed towards life for showing me truth; showing me brave and open-minded people with real issues and raw emotions. Then, I can truly feel we’re ONE and we’re all connected. We’re in this (Life on this earth) together and we’re here to support each other and learn from each other. We’re here to Love and Live LIFE.

Karma yoga and fame?!

Karma yoga is the yoga of selfless (altruistic) service or the ‘discipline of action’. It is based on the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Sanskrit scripture of Hinduism. Karma is derived from the Sanskrit word kri, meaning ‘to do’ and refers to the universal principle of cause and effect. It is the path of doing the right thing and following ones’ personal dharma or life purpose and accepting destiny as it comes. This includes acting without being attached to the fruits of one’s deeds. If you do your work without selfish expectations it purifies your mind.

Karma yoga is performed by right means and does not harm anybody or anything. The so-called ‘doer’ is dropped from the action, since you are a mere tool of the divine. If you practise karma yoga, you’re expressing the unity and the divine, ego plays no part. A karma yoga teacher is aware that the result of the teaching is out of his/her hands. You are an instrument, a servant of truth or love. Unique about karma yoga is the focus on the spiritual and the philosophy behind the process you experience on your mat. Karma yoga can assist you with living your role or dharma in life without actively seeking any remuneration in the shape of wealth, satisfaction or fame.

Then I start to wonder, what is my dharma or life purpose? I can easily think of aspects of my dream job; freelance writing, teaching yoga, counselling, inspire people. Not sure how, when and where yet. I find it challenging to disconnect this with remuneration. Once I made a vision board about my future wishes and without thinking I wrote down the word famous. Why? Maybe it is a wish to be seen and heard, hidden behind my introverted character. Or a deep desire to accomplish something extraordinary in life. I guess – as long as you are not obsessed with your goals and enjoying ‘the ride’- it is okay to strive for them.

For me karma yoga and the associated dharma means; go with the flow in life. You certainly can have specific life goals and at the same time you’re flexible or willing to change your path, while listening to the dedicated signs the universe provides you with. I am the owner of a strong will and I am ‘blessed’ with an abundance of self-discipline and perseverance. Though, at times these characteristics are not very helpful. I tend to ignore my intuition and I don’t listen to the small signals life throws on my path. Whilst the average person already has decided to take another direction, I am still trying hard to go where my rigid mind thinks I have to go to. Yoga is a perfect way to reconnect with my inner world. Practicing yoga allows me to start fresh – like a beginner – with learning to listen and follow my breath. This rhythmic flow of the inhalation and exhalation teaches me to flow more with life and brings me to undiscovered places. I realize once again how wonderful and subtle life is.

The Vishuddha Chakra

The Vishuddha Chakra is the fifth energy center and is referred to as the throat chakra. The fifth chakra is located in the throat region and communication, truth and self-expression are associated with this chakra. Vishuddha means ‘purifier’ and forms the gateway to the chakras devoted to spirituality. It governs your ability to discriminate between right and wrong, speak the truth and give your dreams ‘a voice’. This chakra also deals with creativity, learning to take responsibility for your own needs, confession, faith, self-knowledge and intuition. The associated colour is blue and the element is the space or ether. The sense related to the fifth chakra is hearing. The glands, organs or body parts associated with the Vishuddha chakra are the throat, (para)thyroid gland, trachea, cervical vertebrae, vocal cords, neck, shoulder, arms, hands, esophagus, mouth, teeth, eyes, ears and sinuses.

Blocked fifth Chakra

If your fifth energy center is blocked, you can feel anxious about how other people will react to your views and therefore it is difficult to speak your truth. You may also be unable to listen to others and to your own higher self. This can result in a lack of personal expression, creativity and faith, difficulties in decisions making, and addictions. If your throat chakra is obstructed, you can develop several communication difficulties such as lack of tact, timing and expression and finding it difficult to maintain a balance between speaking and listening. Excessive talking, inability to listen, hearing difficulties, stuttering and a fear of speaking may all be signs of an out of balance throat chakra. Physical problems which may be associated with a blocked fifth chakra are thyroid dysfunctions, throat ailments, stiff neck, shoulder tension, teeth grinding, jaw disorders, mouth ulcers, gum or tooth problems, scoliosis and swollen glands. There could be lumps or tumors on the vocal chords and you may experience trouble swallowing. A person who talks very softly and a person who talks loud and boisterous can both indicate an out of balance fifth chakra. This energy center can be damaged by all that passes through the throat including, lying, gossip, alcohol, smoking, drugs and overeating.

Balanced Vishuddha chakra

If your Vishuddha chakra is balanced, you are easily able to communicate with others and you are able to express the truth without worrying about what others may think. A healthy throat chakra allows you to connect with your inner guidance and to live your truth in daily life through creative and positive self expression. You are able to give and receive the truth and are in touch with your playfulness, joy and innocence. Through constructive communication, contentment, centeredness, wisdom and conscious listening you are able to reach the peak of your creativity and inspiration. So what to do to balance this chakra? Purification is a key word in terms of opening the throat chakra with the aim of achieving sensitivity needed for the subtler upper chakras. You can attain purification through a healthy diet, yoga, meditation and exercise among others. Other ways towards an open and healthy fifth chakra are literally opening up to your thoughts and emotions (including releasing past emotions), speak and live the truth, stimulate your creativity and deep breathing exercises. Become aware of all the thoughts you don’t express and the moments you don’t speak the truth. Breath in some courage to express your innermost beliefs and speak words that come directly from your heart. A healthy Vishuddha chakra will result in a fulfilling life and a true connection with yourself. You will be an excellent listener, speaker and/or writer and often able to inspire others.

Yoga

Yoga is a perfect way to purify the body and mind and thereby opening up the fifth chakra. Postures that are balancing this chakra are neck stretches and shoulder openers like Salamba Sarvangasana (Supported Shoulderstand), Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose), Halasana (Plow Pose), Ustrasana (Camel Pose) and Matysasana (Fish Pose). The sounds of the Ujayii breath (Victory Breath), chanting and Simhasana (Lion Pose) can also be helpful to balance the Vishuddha chakra.

So besides speaking the truth and expressing yourself clearly and honestly what else can you do to clear your throat chakra? You could for example write in a journal to express your feelings and thoughts. The challenge is to start writing at a deeper level: ‘What really needs to be said or heard?’ Singing, humming or chanting with your true voice can also be helpful to open up your fifth chakra. Another challenge: try to listen to someone with your whole being and complete presence for at least five minutes and then change roles. Try not to interrupt each others or provide feedback through facial expression, just be and listen. And at last, read and say this wonderful healing blessing:

“May you hear and speak truth. May your life and your creations express the fullness of who you are. May you know ever deeper levels of truth.”

Samadhi

The final limb is samadhi, a spiritual state of consciousness. Samadhi means ‘to bring together, to merge’. It refers to absolute bliss, in which you and the universe are one. In this state your body and senses are at rest, as if asleep, yet your mind is aware and awake. You have gone beyond time, space and individuality. In this effortless state, you connect with your essential nature. There is only the experience of consciousness, truth and joy. You can compare it with an individual wave settling down and experiencing the unbounded ocean.  

Yoga means union of body, mind and breath. That union alone can bring amazing results. However, there is a higher level of meaning: the union of the thinking mind with the universe or cosmic intelligence. Patanjali defines yoga as ‘the complete settling of the mind’. The results of that, according to the Yoga Sutras, is bliss-consciousness. The bliss of this state eliminates the possibility of any sorrow, great or small. Like no darkness can pierce into the bright light of the sun. You realize that you are a spiritual being having a human experience and not the other way around. In samadhi, you have achieved union and you are in perfect harmony with the ever changing flow of life. You are still acting as an individual who lives it’s life and conducts daily activities. However, you act from the level of your highest self and realize that there is no separation between you and the rest of the universe. According to Patanjali you are always capable of experiencing samadhi, any moment you can become whole and fully present. Required is a willingness to learn and a deep intention to grow as a conscious human being and to live fully in the present moment. It seems like that we need the journey (of yoga) to discover our true being or our true essence. The eight-fold path provide the roadmap for realizing samadhi.

Dhyana

The seventh limb of yoga, dhyana means the development of witnessing awareness. It can refer to a form of meditation or to perfect contemplation. Dhyana can be defined as the practice of mind control by which you stop all thinking and seek to realize Truth in its essence. If you master dhyana, you never lose sight of your deepest self, instead you master the aspect of yourself that is witnessing these changes.

The most efficient way to cultivate dhyana is through meditation. It is good to note that it is normal and acceptable to have thoughts during meditation. When you get more experience with meditation, you learn to observe your thoughts, feelings, sensations and the sounds of your environment without attachment, judgment, chasing or analyzing. You simply notice your thoughts or feelings, acknowledge them, and let them pass. Like the clouds in the sky; they come and go. If you further develop and maintain your meditation practice, you learn to define these skills and bring it into your everyday life. The calm achieved in meditation infects all areas of your life with positive energy.

In terms of development of witnessing awareness, I found it really supportive to go on a silent retreat. Our thoughts are usually directed outwards and much less frequently inwards, since we are constantly concerned with the external world. During a silent retreat you will find opportunities to guide your mind inward and reconnect with your inner peace. I experienced the first few days of the retreat as quite awkward, since I was surrounded by other people, but not interacting with them. It almost felt a bit rude and selfish. But before I knew, I got used to spending so much time with myself. I practiced a lot of different forms of meditation which brought me back to my truth self or inner voice. My goals in life appeared frank and clear, so that I could not ignore them in anyway. In this state of being, I felt grounded and as a consequence I became more equipped to deal with life’s challenges.

Meditation has taught me to make better choices and take more appropriate actions. Consequently, the chances that my intentions will be fulfilled are maximized. On top of that, meditation helps you free yourself from your past and allows you to be in the present. You learn to let the past go and be more fully engaged in the present with the result of being more aware, more empathic, more compassionate, more mindful and more connected. How many more benefits do you need to be convinced of the effects and advantages of dhyana?

Satya

Google satya and you will find lots of Indian restaurants and a movie. If you include truthfullness in your search, you will come closer to the meaning of the second yama. Satya is the sanskrit word for truth. The practise of satya goes way beyond not lying. It includes being truthful and honest with ourselves, followed by being truthful with anyone else.

It does not mean that you have to say out loud all harmful thoughts appearing in your mind. Saying: “What a ugly dress are you wearing today”, while your neighbour passes by, is not satya.  This action would interfere with the first yama ahimsa, non-harming. If you can not say anything nice, do not say it all. Moreover your mind and the resulting thoughts are not The Truth. Though, at times you have to confrontate others with their behaviour. For example your brother is addicted to alcohol and this affects the whole family in a negative way. While dealing with difficult situations like these, it is good to remember the first yama: non-violence and try to handle with love.

Forcing yourself in an intense yoga practise, because your mind says you have to while you are not feeling well, is an example of not practising satya and/or ahimsa. If I find it difficult to be truthful I remind myself that every time I am being untruthful to myself, I install an internal block which keeps me from seeing my own divine radiance. In addition, the law of Karma will grab you anyway. Most of us have experienced that at least one time during their life. If you break that beautiful vase of your grandma and you do not dare to tell her, she will find out anyway and you will feel even worse for not telling her straightaway.

Practising satya will result in openness towards yourself and others. And the best part, it just feels great to be honest, to speak The Truth, to listen to The Truth, to live The Truth. It will bring your relationships with others to a higher level. And at last but not the least, I can assure you, it will increase your feelings of happiness.
